If I just took out the ‘the’ that would have been fine But yes, you make a good additional point. The language itself isn’t just the only bias here, we can often use a neutral stance, the fact that we choose not to is important and hints at the deeper issues.

“I would be happier if the language *were* neutral” :p (Sorry, in a language post, couldn’t resist).

But overall I agree with you; this frustrates me on occasion. One that gets me is lines like “Seventeen people were killed, eight of them women” – so, there is some default case whereby “people” means “men” unless otherwise specified? You would never see “Seventeen people were killed, nine of them men” – that somehow implies the other eight were Martians or something. Or should that be Venusians?

I loved this post and could not agree more. It is certainly a dying art, especially with the younger generation, although my wife and I are constantly working with our kids to better their writing skills. While there are a lot of schools who are starting to do away with things like cursive writing, it was great to see my daughter’s 3rd grade class last year start to learn cursive. I was afraid it was completely going to the way side.
